Simplified vs Traditional Chinese: which should you learn?
Simplified (mainland China, Singapore) or Traditional (Taiwan, Hong Kong, diaspora)? A no-nonsense guide based on where you plan to use it, plus how to switch later without redoing years of study.
Simplified or Traditional? Everyone learning Chinese hits this question in week one. The answer is not "one is easier" — it is "which one matches your target use". Here is the honest breakdown.
Where each is used
- Simplified: Mainland China, Singapore, Malaysia (mostly), most international textbooks
- Traditional: Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, most overseas Chinatowns pre-1980s
The actual difference
Simplified reduced ~2,000 characters, mostly by cutting strokes. Grammar identical. Spoken Mandarin identical (aside from Taiwan/HK accents).
Examples:
| Simplified | Traditional | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 学 | 學 | study |
| 国 | 國 | country |
| 车 | 車 | car |
| 门 | 門 | door |
| 龙 | 龍 | dragon |
Which is easier?
Simplified is objectively easier to write — fewer strokes. But once you read fluently, both feel similar to a native. If you plan to only read (menus, subtitles), the difference shrinks fast.
Decision matrix
| Goal | Learn |
|---|---|
| Work with mainland Chinese companies | Simplified |
| Live/study in Taiwan | Traditional |
| Move to Hong Kong | Traditional (and Cantonese) |
| HSK exam | Simplified (HSK uses it) |
| TOCFL exam | Traditional (Taiwan's version) |
| Read classical Chinese, poetry | Traditional |
| Understand overseas Chinese communities | Both, start with the one the community uses |
Can I learn one, then read the other?
Yes. Most learners who master ~1,500 characters in one script can read the other with 2–3 months of dedicated cross-reading. The mappings are mostly regular.
What if I am still undecided?
Default to Simplified. Reasons:
- HSK (the standard global exam) uses it
- 90% of textbooks, apps, and online content use it
- Mainland has 4× the population; you will hit it more often
- Switching to Traditional later is easier than the reverse
Tools that show both
- Pleco: toggle between scripts
- Vô chi HSK decks: default Simplified, Traditional variant available as toggle
The one thing you cannot fake
You have to pick one for your first 1,000 characters. Trying to learn both simultaneously doubles your load with no benefit. Pick, drill for 6 months, then decide about the second.
