A daily 10-minute Mandarin routine that actually sticks
You do not need 1 hour a day to learn Chinese. You need 10 minutes every day. The exact loop: 5 min review, 3 min new words, 2 min shadowing. Works for HSK 1 through HSK 4.
Everyone knows they should study Chinese daily. Almost no one does. The problem is not motivation — it is that 30-minute study sessions collapse the first busy day, and never restart. Ten-minute sessions do not.
The 10-minute loop
- 5 min — Review all cards due today (SRS)
- 3 min — Learn 3 new characters, sentence + audio
- 2 min — Shadow one native audio clip
Do it once a day. Do not skip. If you have more time on Sunday, do two loops back to back, not one 30-minute grind.
Why 10, not 30
- 10 minutes fits between two meetings, before a shower, on the subway
- Missing a 10-minute day feels recoverable — you do the loop later
- Missing a 30-minute day feels catastrophic — you never restart
Why SRS specifically
At 3 new words/day, you add 1,000/year. FSRS keeps 90% retention at that intake without inflating review time past 5 minutes. Without SRS, retention drops to ~30% by month 3 and the routine becomes futile.
When 3 min for new is not enough
If new words take more than 3 minutes, you are learning too fast. Cut to 2 new/day. Retention beats intake.
When 5 min for review is not enough
If review overflows past 5 minutes for a week, cut new words by half until reviews shrink. FSRS auto-schedules toward the target — reviews should stabilize inside a month.
What to shadow
- HSK 1: standard drill videos (search "HSK 1 listening")
- HSK 2–3: Slow Chinese podcast
- HSK 4+: Chinese news podcast (BBC 中文, RFI 中文)
Play at 0.75× first, then 1×. Match the rhythm, not perfect pronunciation.
Rest days? No.
Rest days break the loop. If exhausted, do only the 5-minute review. Skip new + shadow. The habit stays intact.
