How to learn Mandarin tones fast (30 days, minimum sweat)
Mandarin has 4 tones. Most learners never fix them because they train words, not pairs. This is a 30-day drill using minimal pairs, shadowing, and SRS.
Tones are not the hardest part of Chinese. Fixing them after you already sound wrong is. Do the 30 days below in month one, and you will never sound like a tourist.
The 4 tones (and the neutral)
- 1st (ā) — flat, high
- 2nd (á) — rising, like a question
- 3rd (ǎ) — dip and rise
- 4th (à) — sharp fall
- Neutral — soft, unstressed
Why most people fail
They practice single syllables (mā, má, mǎ, mà) then move on. Real Mandarin comes in pairs. 3-3 changes to 2-3. 4-4 shortens. Never trained → forever wrong.
Week 1 — Isolated tones
- 5 minutes/day, one sound (mā, má, mǎ, mà, ma), record + replay
- Compare to a native audio clip
- Do not move on until a partner (or a language exchange) can pick out all four
Week 2 — Minimal pairs
Drill these 20 pairs daily until they never confuse you:
| Pair | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 妈 mā / 麻 má | mom / hemp |
| 买 mǎi / 卖 mài | buy / sell |
| 是 shì / 十 shí | to be / ten |
| 问 wèn / 文 wén | ask / language |
| 睡 shuì / 水 shuǐ | sleep / water |
Week 3 — Tone sandhi
Two rules cover 80% of cases:
- 3-3 → 2-3. 你好 is ní hǎo, not nǐ hǎo.
- 不 (bù) → bú before 4th tone. 不是 is bú shì, not bù shì.
Drill 10 examples/day for each.
Week 4 — Shadowing
Play a 30-second native clip. Speak simultaneously, match rhythm + tone. Record. Compare. Repeat.
Where SRS fits
Put each minimal pair on a card. FSRS schedules them right when you would confuse them again. Vô chi shows tone marks on every HSK card, so you cannot cheat by reading pinyin without pitch.

Vô chi ships an HSK 1 minimal-pair deck by default. Free download on macOS and Windows.
