HSK 5 vocabulary list with example sentences (1,300 new words)
HSK 5 adds 1,300 new words (2,500 cumulative) and shifts from concrete nouns to abstract, academic vocabulary. Themed list, examples, and a study plan.
HSK 5 is where most self-learners stall. HSK 1–4 vocabulary is concrete — food, weather, directions, things you can point at. HSK 5 adds 1,300 new words on top of HSK 4's 1,200, and a large share are abstract: theory, phenomenon, principle, viewpoint, competition. You can picture 苹果 (an apple). You cannot picture 观念 (a notion). That's the real difficulty spike, and why learners who breezed through HSK 3 and 4 hit a wall here. Below: what changes, the vocabulary grouped by theme, and how to drill it without burning out.
What HSK 5 covers
- Abstract concepts and opinions (观念, 理论, 观点)
- Academic and research language (论文, 研究, 讲座)
- Workplace and professional life (员工, 部门, 业务)
- Media, public discourse and debate (媒体, 辩论, 反对)
- Emotional and psychological states (乐观, 悲观, 勇气)
- Society, economy and gradual change (竞争, 逐渐, 尽管)
A note on the numbers. China's Center for Language Education and Cooperation (the body long known as Hanban) finalized a restructured "HSK 3.0" syllabus in late 2025 that expands the test from 6 levels to 9 and roughly doubles vocabulary at every band — under it, Level 5 would require 3,600 cumulative words (1,600 new). As of this writing, though, the exam actually administered at most test centers is still the older HSK 2.0 standard, where Level 5 requires 2,500 cumulative words — 1,200 carried over from HSK 4 plus 1,300 new ones. This post uses the HSK 2.0 numbers, since that's what you'll be tested on unless your registration says otherwise. Confirm with your test center before you plan your studying around either figure.
If you haven't finished HSK 3 yet, start with the HSK 3 vocabulary list first — this post assumes those 600 cumulative words are already solid. And if you've just worked through the connectors and opinion phrases in the HSK 4 writing cheatsheet, HSK 5 is the natural next step: same skill (arguing a point), bigger vocabulary to do it with.

Study plan
- 1,300 new words over roughly 10 weeks = ~19 new cards/day
- Prioritize the abstract/opinion cluster first — it shows up in every HSK 5 reading passage and in the writing section
- Every card gets one example sentence. Abstract words with no sentence are nearly impossible to recall later, because there's no image to hang the meaning on
- Review new HSK 5 cards alongside due HSK 3–4 reviews so the vocabulary doesn't sit in isolation
At this volume, the scheduling algorithm matters more than it did at HSK 1–2. Fixed intervals (Anki's old SM-2 default) waste reviews on words you already know and under-review the ones you keep forgetting. FSRS instead tracks each card's individual difficulty and predicted memory decay, spacing reviews per-card instead of per-deck — see FSRS vs. SM-2: what changed for the mechanics. On a deck this size, that's the gap between finishing in ten weeks and giving up in week four.
Why examples matter even more at HSK 5
At HSK 2, a bare translation was usually enough — 快 just means fast. At HSK 5, a bare translation actively misleads you. 究竟 and 毕竟 both loosely translate as "after all," but they behave completely differently in a sentence (one asks, one concludes). 观念 and 理论 both gloss as something like "idea," but you'd never swap them. The only way these distinctions stick is by reading the word inside a real sentence, every time you review it — which is also why radical-level decomposition, covered in how to memorize Chinese characters faster, stops being enough on its own at this stage. You need the character, the sentence, and the contrast with its near-synonyms.
Get the deck
Vô chi ships an HSK 5 deck with example sentences for spaced-repetition review, scheduled with FSRS so the abstract words you keep missing show up more often than the ones you don't. Grab it from the download page, or browse the rest of the Learning tips for the other HSK levels.
