How to memorize Chinese characters 3× faster with SRS

The hard part of Mandarin is not tones — it is characters. FSRS spaced repetition, radical decomposition, and daily 10-minute reviews make HSK 1–6 tractable without cramming.

Every English speaker who quits Mandarin quits for the same reason: characters. Grammar is easier than Spanish, tones are learnable in a month, but 3,000 characters for HSK 6 looks impossible. It is not. Here is the method that works.

1. Learn radicals first, not characters

Chinese has ~214 traditional radicals, but 90% of common characters use just ~50. Learn those 50 as their own deck. Every new character will then feel like assembling LEGO instead of copying random strokes.

Example: 好 (good) = 女 (woman) + 子 (child). Once you know both radicals, 好 sticks in under 30 seconds.

2. Card front: character. Card back: pinyin + tone + meaning + one sentence

Skipping the sentence is the single most common SRS mistake. A sentence stores the character in three encodings — visual, phonetic, and contextual — and retention doubles.

3. Use FSRS, not SM-2

Anki's classic algorithm (SM-2) treats every card the same. FSRS (default in Anki 23.10+ and in Vô chi) models each card as difficulty, stability, and retrievability. Result: ~40% fewer reviews for the same 90% retention. On a 3,000-character HSK 6 deck, that saves hundreds of hours.

4. Write once per day. No more.

Motor memory helps. Writing every character every day is overkill. Write only the new ones. Reviews stay digital.

5. Split reading and production decks

Recognition (see character → know meaning) is 4× faster to build than production (see meaning → recall character). Front-load recognition, add production only for high-frequency characters (top 500).

6. Use a desktop pet as your review reminder

Notifications are ignored. A small creature living on your desktop is not — you glance at it and remember. Vô chi's pet naps until a card is due, then wakes up. No streak guilt, no push notifications.

Sample daily loop (10 min)

  1. Review all due cards (~5 min)
  2. Learn 5 new characters, decompose each into radicals (~4 min)
  3. Write the 5 new ones once by hand (~1 min)

At 5 new/day, HSK 3 (600 chars) takes 4 months. HSK 6 (2,500 chars new) takes 18 months. Steady beats crammed.
